Water, The Spice Of Life!

Life on Earth began in water and evolved from it. You have personal experience with this dependence each time you seek water fluids to quench your thirst and replenish your body's water content. The cells inside your body are surrounded by a fluid that is mostly water and your cells themselves range from 70% to 80% in water content. Water is the biological medium here on Earth and the supporter of all life forms.

Water circulates through our body without rest and causes the macromolecules (proteins, enzymes, and genes) and cells in the body to function properly. When information is passed from tissues to tissue, it is water that delivers this information. Water performs not one but many particular tasks, all life supporting or life saving. In a living body, if the circulation of water slows down too much, life ceases. Equally important to both lower and higher organisms, water is the vital generator of life and its supporting force

Not All Water Is Created Equal.

Our natural water resources are under a great deal of stress, as we battle with an ever changing climate, pollution and the needs of a rapidly growing population. Demand for quality drinking water has never been greater!

Our government has a duty to provide us with water that is safe to drink, however the water quality at the point of consumption may not always be complimentary for our short or long-term health. Contaminants including heavy metals, chemicals such as chlorine, pesticides, bacteria, organic & in-organic compounds all can be present in our drinking water.

Given the importance of water to our wellbeing & every bodily function, we owe it to ourselves to ensure that the water we drink is as pure & fresh as possible!

We don't all have a natural spring water source in our back yard & purchasing pre-bottled water can be both inconvenient and is prohibitively expensive, both financially and environmentally.

Ten Reasons To Filter Your Tap Water

  1. Water filtration can provide better tasting and better smelling drinking water by removing chlorine, chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals and bacterial contaminants.

  2. Point-of-use water filters remove lead from drinking water immediately prior to consumption, thus preventing this harmful substance from entering the body.

  3. The purchase of a countertop filter results in a source of clean, healthy water that costs much less than expensive bottled water and reduce toxic waste in the environment.

  4. Water filters greatly reduce the risk of certain cancers including: rectal cancer, colon cancer, and bladder cancer by removing chlorine and chlorine byproducts such as Trihalomethanes (THMs) from drinking water.

  5. A carbon water filter can selectively remove dangerous contaminants from drinking water while retaining healthy mineral deposits that balance the pH of drinking water.

  6. Drinking clean, filtered water protects the body from disease and leads to overall greater health and energy.

  7. A water filter provides clean, healthy water for cooking, as well as drinking, at the convenience of tap water.

  8. Water filters reduce the risk of gastrointestinal disease by more than 80 percent by removing cryptosporidium, e-coli and giardia from drinking water.

  9. Drinking pure water is especially important for children. Water filters provide the healthiest water for children’s developing immune systems.

  10. Water filters offer the last line of defence between the body and the over 2100 known toxins that may be present in drinking water.

Ten Reasons Why You Should Filter Your Shower Water

  1. Using a shower filter is one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce harmful exposure to chlorine and other chemicals.

  2. Showering in filtered water results in greater respiratory health by reducing the risk of asthma and bronchitis from chlorine inhalation.

  3. Showering in chlorine-free, filtered water decreases the risks of bladder and breast cancer.

  4. Children, who are particularly at risk of the harmful effects of chlorine inhalation, benefit especially from the removal of chlorine from showering water.

  5. As chlorine is a leading cause of fatigue, showering in filtered, chlorine-free water results in higher energy levels and overall greater health.

  6. Removing chlorine from showering water results in better air quality throughout the house.

  7. Without the drying effects of chlorine, skin becomes softer, healthier, and younger looking.

  8. Removing chlorine from showering water reduces the presence of skin rashes and the appearance of wrinkles.

  9. Because the hair is able to preserve its natural moisturising oils, it becomes softer and healthier when chlorine is removed from showering water.

  10. When the body is able to retain its natural moisturisers, the need for costly lotions and moisturisers is greatly reduced.

What is drinking water?

Drinking water according to the “Indian Drinking Water Guidelines”:
“Ideally, drinking water should be, clear, colourless, and well aerated with no unpalatable taste or odors. It should contain no suspended matter, harmful chemical substances or pathogenic micro-organisms”.
Despite these guidelines our water supplies come to us at the point of consumption with many undesirable qualities.

Just some of these include:

  • Chlorine – Used for the treatment of water supplies to eliminate many waterborne diseases.

  • Bacteria – Despite initial treatments some unwelcome forms of bacteria can still propagate between initial treatment facilities & the domestic or commercial water source.

  • Organic chemicals – Many of these originate from pesticides, weed killers, commercial & domestic waste.

  • Nitrate – Normally traced to the use of fertilizers & or sewage contamination. Nitrate reacts with other chemicals & forms Nitrite within the digestive tract. It can then go on to form carcinogens which at excessive levels can cause Blue baby syndrome.

  • Lead – This heavy metal finds its way into our drinking water supplies between initial treatment & point of usage from old pipes or lead solder used in joining new piping systems. Lead contaminated water poses a serious health risk to all ages, including learning difficulties, behavioral problems, mental & physical retardation, hypertension, strokes & heart disease. Lead poisoning can take years before the effects can be detected but often the damage is already done.

  • Aluminium – There are clear links between Aluminium & Alzheimer’s Disease. Aluminium also raises the acidity of water allowing it to absorb greater levels of lead, cadmium, copper & other heavy metals from piping systems.

  • Mercury - More likely to effect people that use a natural water source it can cause ulcers, skin irritations, dental problems, internal bleeding, liver & kidney damage.

  • Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) – Originating from cast iron or mild steel pipelines which have been treated with asphalt or bitumen coating to prevent corrosion & are believed to be carcinogenic.

  • Fluoride – Added to many of India's water sources to reduce tooth cavities. The addition of fluoride to municipal water is banned in many nations & it is debated as being in contradiction of the Geneva Convention, as being mass medication without prescription. Linked to many long-term health defects. In high doses is lethal.

  • Cadmium – Like lead accumulates in the body over a long period & may cause stomach cramps, kidney & liver damage.

  • Trihalomethanes – Strong poisonous compounds formed by organic chemicals reacting with chlorine treated drinking water. Responsible for around 10 percent of rectal & bladder cancers according to The American Journal of Public Health.

What Is Hydration?

The cells in the human body are comprised mostly of water, it is said that from 60% to 80% of a person's weight is water. Therefore, a person who weighs 60kg contains from 36kg to 48 kg of water, in order to survive, a human being needs this much water.

Hydration is simply the percentage of intracellular water held and utilised. The amount of water recycled daily by an adult person's kidneys is approximately 190 litres. The water that is discharged daily through urine and sweat is around 2.5 litres and must be replaced.

  • At only 1% dehydration our ability to think clearly and cope with stress begins to diminish.

  • At around 3% thirst and discomfort is experienced and our ability to perform both physically (Up to 30%) and mentally is significantly impaired.
  • From +7% dehydration this condition becomes chronic and our genes do not function properly starting to break down.

  • In excess of 10% dehydration the person can go into a coma, as the body does not have sufficient intracellular fluid to function.
  • Should our intracellular hydration continue to decrease to between 15% & 20% the effects are likely to be fatal.

Extended periods of dehydration can have a significant effect on our health & our ability to fight off infection & disease. Many studies show that a significant percentage of society are constantly dehydrated, there is no substitute for drinking water! Coffee, tea & most soft drinks can act as diuretics, which all contribute to further dehydration. Is it any wonder that we can feel tired & stressed for no apparent reason?

Water and DNA

Water is the matrix of life, but it is also a crucial medium by which the most important life-supporting information is transferred. The core impact that water has on life, DNA and our genes is significant. Water allows the gene to express itself and the proteins thus activated perform their functions in water. By storing information from various genes and hormones, water preserves a great deal of information about its surrounding environment, information that sustains and ensures the normal sustenance of the organs in the human body. As you can see, water, ubiquitous in nature, is ubiquitous as well in human existence.

Cells have cytoplasms and karyoplasms, the basic ingredient for cytoplasm and karyoplasm is water, the aqueous solution. This water acts as a buffer with a variety of solutes. Protein and genes do not react without water. Water becomes a playground for the enzymes and the proteins to act, so it effectively acts as a catalyst for metabolic reaction.

Water can affect the skeletal structure of DNA, affect the enzymes that express the genes in the DNA and actually express the genes effectively. Also, without water, the two strands of DNA do not uncoil and therefore the expression of genes does not occur. As discussed, water is ubiquitous throughout the molecular activities of a living body and helps life forms to continue living. If bad ingredients are present in water, this may affect the proteins, the enzymes and the DNA, causing a malfunction of the enzymes and serious problems in the metabolism. It is for these reasons that it is vitally important to drink good water. The conclusion is that you must drink what your genes want.

Alkaline Water

Alkaline mineral water is able to generate hydrogen when various mineral ingredients are mixed and dissolved in water. Mineral alkaline reduced water has a negative value for oxidation reduction potential (ORP). The smaller the negative value for ORP, the better the functionality. This means that it is particularly effective in the reduction of harmful active oxygen.
Professor H.W Kim of Yonsei University has done a lot of research on mineral alkaline reduced water. His research has shown various positive effects in regards to the existence of hexagonal water, including anti-cancerous effects and immune system strengthening ability. (Refer to Water of Life). According to the results of many researchers, in summary, the following effects of mineral alkaline reduced water can be.

  • Turns the acidic blood condition of the body to alkaline state.
  • Removes & eliminates lactic acid build up in muscles and cell tissue
  • Effective for regulation of bowel movement.
  • Reduces acidic wastes in the blood.
  • Reduces fat content in the body.
  • Promotes blood circulation.

Slightly alkaline pH7.4~pH 8.2, contains the restorative force to reduce active oxygen. Active oxygen is the source for so many diseases and has a vast influence on aging. If simply drinking water removes active oxygen, there can be no better medication!
Improves the immune system. It was observed that interferon, interleukin and other bodily fluids, which are indicator substances for the immune system all increased with the consumption of mineral alkaline water.

Has an anti-cancerous effect and prevents the spread of cancerous cells.

This theory was vindicated by experiments using rats (Due to common cell tissues to humans). Rats were injected with skin cancer cells and when fed with alkaline water the spread of the cancer cells was significantly lower than the rats were fed with normal water.
Homeostasis effect and removing active oxygen.
It was reported that rats injected with cancer cells showed excessive amounts of active oxygen. It was discovered that the group that was fed with alkaline water had their amount of active oxygen greatly reduced. Good water is water with abundant hydrogen.

Organic and Inorganic Minerals

In nature, there exist inorganic and organic minerals. The term “inorganic minerals” refers to minerals dissolved in nature. The term “organic minerals” refers to the minerals that had been absorbed by plants or animals and combined with other inorganic minerals. Certain Inorganic minerals can be very harmful to human body. However, organic minerals are not harmful, because they were generated through chemical reactions with other inorganic minerals in a living body.

Role of Minerals in Our Body

Minerals are extremely small elements that are absolutely necessary for vitality of life. Minerals play an important role in maximising the functionality of the enzymes in every stage of the body’s metabolism. Every enzyme needs different minerals.
If minerals are deficient, the catalyst reaction of the enzymes slows down and the metabolism process undergoes seriously adverse effects. The DNA polymerases that synthesize the DNA use Mg++ as the cofactor. The absence of Mg++ affects DNA synthesis adversely.
Calcium is an important element for bone formation, and although they are only needed in extremely small quantities, various minerals such as copper, zinc, cobalt, lithium, boron, selenium, germanium and others are required.
Many of these essential minerals were thought to be harmful to human health in case until not so long ago. However, these metals, in extremely small quantities, are vitally necessary for the body’s metabolism and the maintenance of good health.
